I posted on this site a few months ago as I was planning to show Dark Towers to my class at school. Well good to report that my class and I absolutely loved it!
All of the children enjoyed reading the story chapter by chapter and even the ones who struggle to read really tried hard with their reading.
They all found it a bit scary as I did when I was at school, but at the end of term when I asked them what they enjoyed the most in their year at school, alot of them said the two Look and Read stories we watched as watched Fairground as well.
Taped TBFS today so look forward to completing that story with my class.
Teacher, be careful showing them "The Boy from Space," it'll f**k the kids up.
Some of them won't be able to talk for weeks afterwards whilst others will need councilling. Are you going to provide it? No, I don't think so. Introducing them to "The boy from space" will just be burdening the children with many years of sleepless nights and terrifying thoughts. They will wake up sweating in the night, calling for their mums and their mums won't come and they will go out into the playground during lunchtimes in a morbid silence, suddenly realising that the World around them is a very different place to the one they once felt was so friendly and warm.
Peep Peep has an irreversible effect on people. especially children. His sullen appearance and his stange way of communicating and moving are immedietly disturbing to any human. Once a pair of eyes have cast their glaze over Peep Peep, his face is a difficult, arguablly impossible one to remove from a child's mind. I am 25 years old and many a thought or memory has slipped through my brain since I started school in 1984....but the solemn, blank, myseterious creature that is the boy from space.....never. Never. How I wish it would have left me a long time ago. I did try, how I tried. But it stayed.
As for Thin man and the scenes in the sandpit, well, Teacher, if you dare introduce your class of children to this wicked, wicked World and one of the most disturbing and frightning screen villains of all time, then I don't know whether to think you brave or stupid. Do you really want to do this to a classroom of small, innocent children?
Don't do it. Burn the videos and show them something else. On behalf of your children, I beg of you to take my advice.
What's all this rubbish? Scary? Maybe if you're a particularly timid little girl. In nursery school.
One bloke poncing round in a blue tracksuit, can't even speak to issue any threats, faints after a couple of minutes' exercise & is scared of a young boy. Pah.
So you're not planning to use The Boy From Space when you're a teacher then Glyn? Or maybe you're just trying to get all other teachers to burn their tapes so you can be the only one in the world to show the story & earn a bit of easy kudos from the kids.
That's fantastic how popular the stories still are, Teacher, but please (assuming you haven't already) write to or ring up Class TV & tell them about it as I'm sure they'd love the feedback & they're really nice to talk to about the programmes. Maybe it'd persuade them to get out some more archive stuff!
I'm hoping to have a bit of very nice old Boy From Space stuff to put up on here later this week, by the way, something I've been hoping to get hold of for quite a while...
I sent them an email at the end of last term, although I have not yet recieved a reply.
My videotape ran out at 11:30am this morning unfortunately so I missed episode 6. I forgot to set it on long play - nightmare!
Do you know if there are plans to repeat TBFS in the Spring term? I am going to record 7-10 this week and maybe just read chapter 6, although the cliffhanger ending of the shadow on the stairs will be missed.
TBFS is scary but that is the fun of it. That is why it stays with you into adulthood.
Fair point, part two of the boy from space gave me nightmares for weeks but at the age of 26 now ive grown to love it. i missed part two tho, anyone know when it will be on again?
Teacher, drop me an email if you fancy, though I'm not sure how much help I can be... (general note: unsolicited, bland tape requests to the site will continue to be ignored, as they have been for years)
I would lay extremely good odds on The Boy From Space being trotted out again for the spring term - it has been on consistently every term for the past year, after all, and it's easily the highest-profile 'nostalgic' Look & Read, innit - it's even got them a few nice but under-researched news stories on the BBC Cult TV website. Does anybody know if any of the cult TV magazines have ever picked up on the repeats?
Anyway, don't you miss the days when, if you missed an episode of Look & Read, you could just tape the repeat later in the week!
